As this recent issue of Time magazine predicts, the new ten-year trend is “The Dropout Economy,” where young people are forced to explore radical alternatives as work disappears and the financial burden becomes intolerable: “As conventional high schools and colleges prepare the next generation for jobs that won’t exist, we’re on the cusp of a dropout revolution, one that will spark an era of experimentation in new ways to learn and new ways to live.” Time’s forecast could be read as a desperate plea that young people, instead of rising up in fury against the older generation that depleted the planet’s resources at their expense, will make virtue out of necessity: “Faced with the burden of financing the decades-long retirement of aging boomers, many of the young embrace a new underground economy, a largely untaxed archipelago of communes, co-ops, and kibbutzim that passively resist the power of the granny state while building their own little utopias.” -Exerpt from This Daniel Pinchbeck article.

THE NEW POOR: In Hard Times, Lured Into Trade School and Debt
Great NYT article about the need for radical innovation in education. @unclasses and @teachstreet are a good start.

I’m motivated by collaborating with my friends, family, and neighbors to work towards a shared vision of a better neighborhood, city, and world.
I’m motivated my merging science and technology with the natural world. Designing systems that allow nature and humans to compliment one another.
I’m motivated by growing myself every day. Being so happy and healthy the people around are inspired to help my endeavors, and create their own visions of a better world.

I’m awakened by beauty at dawn before sunrise. I hear owls, see fireflies and bees who have returned to my neighborhood. I’m excited because my mobile device shows me four neighbors are already awake, juicing vegetables and baking bread.
This life began when I when returned to the community where I grew up. I started replacing city-mowed grass with vegetable gardens. Although technically against regulations, my community supported my efforts.
Today I’ll oversee teams who mix soil, build compost piles, and make stone retaining walls for vegetable beds. I will meet with the local school principle to discuss a new rooftop garden. Then, I’ll present to a city-planner an aquaponic fishery and solar-pump powered vertical garden to install at a local park.
I’m happy. I never realized I would receive so much help by returning home to build my vision of a better world. I’m energized by enthusiasm from my neighbors, and the fresh produce and meals constantly being cooked and shared. I’m content, realizing I’m happy doing almost anything, if I’ve got enough energy and the right mindset.
At sundown I will eat and play Capoeira with friends. I challenge myself in daily life to be more active and aware. I do this to become a better leader, and more fun in the roda.
